1 Kun maassa vallitsi suuri kuivuus, Jeremialle tuli tämä Herran sana: |
1 Herran sana, joka tuli Jeremialle suuren kuivuuden tähden. |
1 That which hath been the word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah concerning the matters of the dearths: |

2 -- Juuda suree, sen kaupungit riutuvat, portit vaipuvat murheissaan maahan. Valitushuuto kohoaa Jerusalemista! |
2 "Juuda murehtii, sen portit raukeavat, kallistuvat murheasussa maahan; ja Jerusalemista nousee valitushuuto. |
2 Mourned hath Judah, and her gates have languished, They have mourned to the earth, And the cry of Jerusalem hath gone up. |

3 Ylhäiset lähettävät palvelijansa etsimään vettä, mutta kun nämä tulevat vesikuopalle, pisaraakaan ei ole. He palaavat astiat tyhjinä, ja pettyneinä, alla päin he peittävät kasvonsa. |

3 And their honourable ones have sent their little ones to the water, They have come unto ditches, They have not found water, They have turned back--their vessels empty! They have been ashamed, And have blushed and covered their head. |

4 Because the ground hath been broken, For there hath been no rain in the land, Ashamed have been husbandmen, They have covered their head. |

5 Peura poikii metsikössä mutta hylkää vasansa, kun ei ole mitään syötävää. [Joel 1:18] |
5 Peurakin kedolla poikii ja hylkää vasikkansa, kun ei ole mitään vihantaa. |
5 For even the hind in the field hath brought forth--to forsake it! For there hath been no grass. |

6 Villiaasit seisovat paljailla kukkuloilla, haukkovat ilmaa kuin sakaalit ja katsovat riutunein silmin -- ruohoa ei ole. |
6 Ja villiaasit seisovat kalliokukkuloilla, haukkovat ilmaa niinkuin aavikkosudet; niiden silmät ovat riutuneet, kun ei ruohoa ole." |
6 And wild asses have stood on high places, They have swallowed up wind like dragons, Consumed have been their eyes, for there is no herb. |

7 -- Vaikka rikoksemme todistavat meitä vastaan, auta, Herra, nimesi ja kunniasi tähden! Monta kertaa me olemme luopuneet sinusta, tehneet syntiä sinua vastaan. |
7 Vaikka pahat tekomme todistavat meitä vastaan, tee työsi, Herra, nimesi tähden; sillä meidän luopumuksemme ovat monet, sinua vastaan me olemme syntiä tehneet. |
7 Surely our iniquities have testified against us, O Jehovah, work for Thy name's sake, For many have been our backslidings, Against Thee we have sinned. |

8 Herra, sinä olet Israelin toivo, pelastaja ahdingon aikana! Miksi olet nyt kuin muukalainen, kuin vieras vaeltaja, joka vain yhdeksi yöksi poikkeaa taloon? |
8 Sinä Israelin toivo, sen vapahtaja ahdingon aikana, minkätähden sinä olet kuin muukalainen maassa, kuin matkamies, joka poikkeaa majaan vain yöpyäksensä? |
8 O Hope of Israel--its saviour in time of trouble, Why art Thou as a sojourner in the land? And as a traveller turned aside to lodge? |

9 Miksi olet kuin neuvoton mies, kuin soturi, josta ei ole puolustajaksi? Olethan sinä kuitenkin meidän keskellämme, ja meitä kutsutaan sinun omiksesi. Älä jätä meitä, Herra! |

9 Why art Thou as one dumb? As a mighty one not able to save? And Thou art in our midst, O Jehovah, And Thy name over us is called, leave us not. |
Kansa uskoo vääriä profeettoja | ||

10 Näin sanoo Herra tästä kansasta: "He kulkevat sinne ja tänne eivätkä hillitse askeleitaan -- se on heille mieleen! Mutta minä, Herra, en enää sitä siedä. Minä muistan heidän rikoksensa ja rankaisen heitä heidän synneistään." [Jer. 2:31 | Hoos. 8:13, 9:9] |
10 Näin sanoo Herra tästä kansasta: Noin he mielellänsä harhailevat, eivät pidätä jalkojansa. Ei Herra mielisty heihin; hän muistaa nyt heidän pahat tekonsa ja rankaisee heidän syntinsä. |
10 Thus said Jehovah concerning this people: Well they have loved to wander, Their feet they have not restrained, And Jehovah hath not accepted them, Now doth He remember their iniquity, And inspect their sin. |

11 Ja Herra sanoi minulle: "Älä rukoile tämän kansan puolesta, sen hyväksi. |
11 And Jehovah saith unto me: Thou dost not pray for this people for good, | |
|
12 Vaikka nämä ihmiset paastoavat, minä en kuule heidän valitustaan; vaikka he uhraavat polttouhreja ja ruokauhreja, he eivät saa minua leppymään. Miekalla, nälällä ja rutolla minä teen heistä lopun." [Ps. 18:42+; Sananl. 15:8+ | Jes. 51:19+] |
12 Vaikka he paastoavat, en minä kuule heidän huutoansa, ja vaikka he uhraavat polttouhreja ja ruokauhreja, en minä heihin mielisty, vaan miekalla, nälällä ja rutolla minä heidät lopetan." |
12 When they fast, I hearken not unto their cry, And when they cause to ascend burnt-offering and present, I accept them not, For by sword, and by famine, And by pestilence, I am consuming them. |

13 Minä vastasin: "Mutta Herra, Jumalani, profeetathan puhuvat heille näin: 'Ette tule näkemään miekkaa ettekä nälänhätää, sillä Herra antaa teille pysyvän onnen tässä maassa.'" [Jer. 5:12] |
13 Niin minä sanoin: "Voi, Herra, Herra! Katso, profeetat sanovat heille: 'Ei teidän tarvitse nähdä miekkaa eikä kärsiä nälkää, vaan minä annan teille vakaan rauhan tässä paikassa'." |
13 And I say, `Ah, Lord Jehovah, Lo, the prophets are saying to them: Ye do not see a sword, yea, famine is not to you, For true peace I give to you in this place.' |

14 Herra sanoi minulle: "Silkkaa valhetta julistavat profeetat minun nimissäni! Minä en ole heitä lähettänyt, en ole antanut heille tehtävää enkä puhunut heille. Valhenäkyjä, tyhjiä ennustuksia ja petollisia kuvitelmiaan he teille julistavat. [Jer. 27:14, 29:8] |
14 Mutta Herra sanoi minulle: "Valhetta ennustavat profeetat minun nimessäni; minä en ole lähettänyt heitä, en käskenyt heitä enkä puhunut heille. Valhenäkyjä, turhia ennustuksia ja oman sydämensä petosta he ennustavat teille. |
14 And Jehovah saith unto me: Falsehood the prophets are prophesying in My name, I did not send them, nor command them, Nor have I spoken unto them: A false vision, and divination, and vanity, And the deceit of their own heart, they are prophesying to you. |

15 He ovat ennustaneet minun nimissäni, vaikka minä en ole lähettänyt heitä, ja sanoneet, ettei miekka eikä nälänhätä tule tähän maahan. Ja nyt minä, Herra, ilmoitan sinulle, mitä aion tehdä näille profeetoille: he kuolevat miekkaan ja nälkään! |
15 Sentähden, näin sanoo Herra profeetoista, jotka ennustavat minun nimessäni, vaikka minä en ole heitä lähettänyt, ja jotka sanovat, että miekka ja nälkä ei tule tähän maahan: miekkaan ja nälkään hukkuvat nämä profeetat. |
15 Therefore, thus said Jehovah concerning the prophets who are prophesying in My name, and I have not sent them, and they are saying, Sword and famine is not in this land: By sword and by famine are these prophets consumed. |

16 Samoin käy kansan, jolle he ennustavat -- Jerusalemin kadut täyttyvät nälkään ja miekkaan menehtyneistä. Eikä ole ketään, joka hautaisi heidät ja heidän vaimonsa, poikansa ja tyttärensä. Minä syöksen heidän päälleen onnettomuuden, jonka he pahuudellaan ovat ansainneet." [Jer. 7:33+] |
16 Ja kansa, jolle he ennustavat, suistuu Jerusalemin kaduilla nälkään ja miekkaan, eikä kukaan heitä hautaa-ei heitä, ei heidän vaimojansa, poikiansa eikä tyttäriänsä. Minä vuodatan heidän pahuutensa heidän päällensä." |
16 And the people to whom they are prophesying, Are cast into out-places of Jerusalem, Because of the famine, and of the sword, And they have none burying them, Them, their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, And I have poured out upon them this evil. |

17 -- Puhu heille nämä sanat: Kyyneleet vuotavat silmistäni yötä päivää, taukoamatta. Neitsyt, oma kansani, on saanut ankaran iskun, parantumattoman haavan! [Jer. 10:19] |
17 Ja sano heille tämä sana: Minun silmistäni vuotavat kyyneleet yötä päivää, eivät lakkaa; sillä neitsyt, tytär, minun kansani, on raskaasti runneltu, ylen kipeällä iskulla. |
17 And thou hast said unto them this word: Tears come down mine eyes night and day, And they do not cease, For, with a great breach, Broken hath been the virgin daughter of my people, A very grievous stroke. |

18 Kun menen ulos kaupungista, näen kaikkialla miekan kaatamia! Kun tulen kaupunkiin takaisin, näen kaikkialla nälkään nääntyneitä! Profeetat ja papitkin harhailevat ympäri maata eivätkä tiedä, mitä tehdä. |
18 Jos minä kedolle lähden, katso-miekan kaatamia! Jos tulen kaupunkiin, katso-kalvava nälkä! Sillä sekä profeetat että papit kiertävät maata eivätkä mitään tiedä. |
18 If I have gone forth to the field, Then, lo, the pierced of the sword! And if I have entered the city, Then, lo, the diseased of famine! For both prophet and priest have gone up and down Unto a land that they knew not. |

19 -- Oletko, Herra, kokonaan hylännyt Juudan, etkö lainkaan välitä Siionista? Miksi olet lyönyt meitä niin, ettemme enää toivu? Me toivoimme rauhaa, mutta mitään hyvää ei tullut. Me odotimme, että haavamme parantuisivat, mutta meille koittikin kauhun aika. [Jer. 8:15] |
19 Oletko sinä kokonaan hyljännyt Juudan, vierooko sielusi Siionia? Minkätähden olet lyönyt meitä, niin ettemme voi parantua? Odotetaan rauhaa, mutta hyvää ei tule, paranemisen aikaa, mutta katso, tulee peljästys! |
19 Hast Thou utterly rejected Judah? Zion hath Thy soul loathed? Wherefore hast Thou smitten us, And there is no healing to us? Looking for peace, and there is no good, And for a time of healing, and lo, terror. |

20 Me tunnemme, Herra, jumalattomuutemme, isiemme pahat teot, sillä sinua vastaan me olemme syntiä tehneet. |
20 We have known, O Jehovah, our wickedness, The iniquity of our fathers, For we have sinned against Thee. | |
|
21 Sinun nimeesi me vetoamme -- älä heitä meitä pois, älä anna valtaistuimesi kunnian joutua häväistyksi! Muista liittoa, jonka teit kanssamme, älä anna sen raueta! |
21 Älä hylkää, nimesi tähden! Älä anna kunniasi valtaistuinta häväistäväksi; muista, älä riko, liittoasi meidän kanssamme. |
21 Do not despise, for Thy name's sake, Dishonour not the throne of Thine honour, Remember, break not Thy covenant with us. |

22 Voivatko vieraiden kansojen epäjumalat antaa sateen, tai tekeekö taivas itse sadekuurot? Etkö yksin sinä, Herra, Jumalamme! Sinuun me panemme toivomme, sinä olet kaiken luonut. [Job 5:10; Ps. 147:8; Ap. t. 14:17] |
22 Onko pakanain turhista jumalista sateen antajiksi, tahi taivasko antaa sadekuurot? Etkö sinä ole Herra, meidän Jumalamme? Sinua me odotamme, sillä sinä olet tehnyt kaiken tämän. |
22 Are there among the vanities of the nations any causing rain? And do the heavens give showers? Art not Thou He, O Jehovah our God? And we wait for thee, for Thou--Thou hast done all these! |
